Decorating Ideas for Twins’ 1st Room
2-13-2014
A new baby in the house is always a source of great joy, and when a mother is expecting twins, the joy is doubled – as is the apprehension about how to decorate the twins’ nursery. Many mothers spend months planning every detail about how the twins’ room will look and afterwards find that they are still dissatisfied with the results they have achieved.
Decorating a nursery for twins offers some special challenges, but when everything is taken into account it is not really all that much different from decorating a nursery for a single baby. Probably the best advice at this early stage is to look at pictures of as many nurseries as possible. Study the color schemes, the furniture, the choice of accessories, as well as the fabrics and different types of carpets used.
Practicalities
While the twins are still babies, most parents prefer to have a single nursery for both of them. This makes it easier to change their diapers and keep an eye on them once they are able to move around on their own.
The most important piece of furniture in the twins’ nursery is no doubt the twin crib. Although there are double-decker twin cribs and L-shaped cribs available on the market, these are not recommended. A double-decker crib can be dangerous once the babies start to grow up, and with an L-shaped crib a baby can become ‘trapped’ in the corner.
Two separate cribs will work perfectly, especially if they are placed just a couple of feet apart. This will allow the mother to pat both babies at the same time. Alternatively parents can opt for a crib divider, which is becoming an increasingly popular option in the UK and the US.
The next important piece of furniture is the changing table. Remember that younger babies need fresh diapers eight to ten times a day on average. Having another changing table in the living room could help to make the mother’s life a lot easier.
Décor
The décor of the twins’ nursery will obviously be determined by whether they are girls or boys to a large extent. Of course they could also be a boy and a girl – which will complicate things somewhat. However, as a general rule children love bright colors, animals, things making funny sounds, and toys, so make certain there are plenty of these things around the nursery.
Displaying the baby’s name above the crib is a great way to ‘anchor’ it in the room and it also adds a nice personal touch to the space. Another great way to add a decorative touch to the room is to add personalized bunting.
Flooring
While some people might argue that a hardwood floor in a twins’ nursery is much easier to keep clean than a carpet, this is not necessarily the case. To keep a hardwood floor clean, especially if one has pets in the house, it not only has to be swept about twice a day, it also has to be wiped with a wet mop at the same time. A carpet acts in much the same way as a filter, trapping allergens; it is important to vacuum regularly to ensure a healthy, clean environment.
As the twins grow, a carpet on the floor will provide a soft, safe surface for them to crawl on, and help to cushion the inevitable spills associated with those first steps. You can click here to learn more about the best type of carpet to use in any nursery.
